Uh Oh...

I just had a look at this blog for the first time in about 11 months... it's all screwed up. I'm wondering if this post will fix the formatting. If not, please ignore it.

Quite frankly, I should do something about this. Either blog here (last post was Nov '07) or shut it down. I'll give it some thought. Don't be surprised if the blog disappears.

How the Backup/Restore works in Project 2007

1. I created a test project in Project 2007 with 3 tasks in it (task a, b, c)
2. I took a backup of all projects through Server Settings --> Administrative Backup
3. I added some time (through My Tasks) to task b, and changed the overall remaining work to 40hrs
4. I approved the task update and then added some tasks in MS Project (tasks d and e)
5. I published the project, saw the changes in Project Center
6. I then restored the project using Server Settings --> Administrative Restore
7. In Project Center it still shows as the last published (i.e. tasks a through to e), but in MS Project it shows as the original project above
8. In My Tasks, it still shows as the 40hr task with actuals against it
9. I published the (restored) project from MS Project
10. In My Tasks, it still shows as the 40hr task with actuals against it, until I actually click into the task (e.g. click on the task name), then it goes back to an 8hr task

This means that a restore will not only get rid of actuals, but also any added tasks (which is what I would expect)

Writing the perfect email

I spend a lot of time writing email in my role. And I think I'm pretty good at it (I do get a lot of positive feedback about the emails I write). I like to take the time to carefully craft them - the more important they are, the more time they get. I stumbled across this article on "How to write the perfect email". I think it's pretty good - take some time to check it out

Marc is an MVP!

It's been too long between posts here, but here is something definitely worth blogging about.

Marc is now a Project Server MVP. I'm so happy for him. Well done Marc :) Well deserved indeed.

Article on Project Server 2007

I wrote an article a couple of months ago (with the help of Alex Angas) for the Australian Institute of Project Managers on Project Server 2007's new features. Thought I should really blog that, and give you a link to read the article

Project Server 2007

It's been a bit quiet on this blog front, but I am hoping to change that across the next little while. And I'll be starting to expand the scope of this blog to include other areas. But right now, I wanted to talk a little about Project Server 2007.

I've been working now (properly) with Project Server 2007 for a couple of months. The company I work for is fortunate enough to have a decent number of '07 jobs underway right now, all with different scope and objectives, so it's been a good opportunity to put it to the test, and share experiences with the team.

Initial thoughts? Well, the whole "PWA built as a SharePoint app" is pretty cool - and very flexible for doing UI changes - I'm a big fan of that. Have been able to prototype some great stuff for clients. The major client side changes (i.e. Project Pro's multi level undo, change highlighting and visual reports) are a knockout - I steam thinking of how long we had to live without them.

The downside though? Reporting is still a bit clunky (or non-existent where it should be just built in) and resource management hasn't made any major advances (where it could have some great improvements done to it).

Don't get me wrong though - I'm really loving working with '07. It's considerably ahead of where we were with '03. I actually want to spend my spare time in a Virtual Server these days, playing around with what's possible. More to come ...

Stop gap post

It's been a while since I posted - sorry about that - it's a busy time of the year.

So here's a blog entry I wish I had've written.

Most useless Error explanation ever

(Imagine I said that in the voice of the comic-store guy in The Simpsons)

Thats right, the resolution is to "... make sure that you type the correct user name and password of your Project Server user account when you log on to Project Server. "
